Pine Cone Vase - Roseville Brown Art Pottery 910-10 Double Handle c. 1940

¤575.00

Overview A handsome Roseville Pottery Pine Cone vase in the desirable brown colorway, form 910-10, dating to about 1940. The tall, footed body is framed by sculptural branch-form handles and finished with a softly scalloped rim. In raised relief, a single pinecone and long, rhythmic needles sweep across the warm russet-brown surface, picked out in olive green, ochre, and deep bark tones. At 10 inches high, this is a substantial and unusually architectural example of one of Roseville's most enduring patterns. Highlights • Roseville Pottery Pine Cone pattern in warm brown and russet glazes • Impressed Roseville signature and form number 910-10 on the underside • Sculptural double branch handles, scalloped rim, and broad pedestal foot • Raised pinecone and sweeping pine-needle decoration with shaded green and ochre accents • Strong 10-inch scale suited to a mantel, library, console, or collected American art pottery display Why You Will Love It This vase has presence without excess. Its broad cylindrical body and dark pedestal foot give it visual authority, while the asymmetrical pine bough brings movement across the surface. The brown glaze is especially easy to place: it reads as warm and sophisticated rather than rustic, pairing naturally with walnut, leather, linen, brass, and muted modern interiors. It works equally well as a functional vase or as a sculptural object in its own right. Dating / Background Roseville Pottery was founded in Ohio in 1890 and became one of the defining names in American art pottery. After expanding into Zanesville, the company developed a broad succession of decorative lines distinguished by strong forms, nature-based ornament, and expressive commercial glazes. Under longtime art director Frank Ferrell, Roseville produced many of its most recognizable twentieth-century designs. Introduced in the mid-1930s, Pine Cone became Roseville's great commercial success and remained in production through multiple expansions of the line. Its combination of naturalistic relief, sculptural handles, and shaded glazes made it immediately recognizable and helped sustain the company during a difficult period. Form 910-10 belongs to the marked generation of Pine Cone wares associated with about 1940; the impressed Roseville signature and form number shown on the base support that dating. Condition Very good to excellent vintage condition. The photographs show a clean rim, intact branch-form handles, strong relief, and an attractive, even presentation of the shaded glaze. Light age-appropriate shelf wear and residue are visible on the unglazed foot. No chips, cracks, or repairs are apparent in the supplied photographs. As with any vintage ceramic, minor glaze variation and small firing characteristics are part of the original manufacture. Please review all photographs, including the rim, interior, handles, and underside. Dimensions (inches) Height: 10 Width: 8 1/2 Depth: 6 Weight: 3.4 pounds Care Dust with a soft dry cloth. If needed, wipe gently with a barely damp cloth and dry at once. Avoid the dishwasher, abrasive cleaners, prolonged soaking, and lifting the vase by its branch-form handles. When displaying with water or fresh greenery, use a protective coaster beneath the foot. Why Collect Pine Cone stands at the center of Roseville collecting because it combines a famous pattern with an unusually wide vocabulary of forms and colors. This 910-10 vase adds the appeal of an imposing footed silhouette, intact sculptural handles, a clearly impressed factory mark, and the warm brown glaze. It is a mature, instantly recognizable example of American art pottery that can anchor a collection while remaining highly decorative in a contemporary room.
