Bronze Bodhisattva on Elephant, Two-Piece Figure (Guanyin/Samantabhadra)

Bronze Bodhisattva on Elephant, Two-Piece Figure (Guanyin/Samantabhadra)

¤195.00

Description Substantial cast-bronze figure of a robed Bodhisattva riding an elephant. The rider (separate casting) seats into an aperture at the saddle and displays a cutwork nimbus and a staff/lotus. Surfaces show a dark, mellow patina with areas of lighter rub where handled. Stylistically aligned with Chinese/Sino-Asian decorative bronzes; the elephant mount is emblematic of Samantabhadra (Puxian) in Buddhist iconography and sometimes associated with Guanyin. Highlights - Heavy solid-feel bronze, two-part construction (rider removes) - Elephant with trappings and figural panels to each side - Nimbus behind the figure; staff/lotus in hand - Decorative presence at just over a foot tall Why you’ll love it It reads as a dramatic statement piece with the warmth of aged bronze—perfect for a bookshelf, console, or home altar. The separable rider makes it an engaging object to study and display. Dating & background: Likely 20th century decorative casting inspired by Buddhist imagery. Elephant-mounted Bodhisattvas are most commonly linked to Samantabhadra (Puxian) in East Asian traditions; some folk depictions also associate the pose with Guanyin. This example is more rustic/folk in execution than temple bronzes, with visible casting seams and tool-finishing. Condition: Structurally sound overall with a dark patina, scattered rubs, casting pits, and tool marks typical of workshop production. The rider currently needs a small shim to stand securely in the saddle aperture (easy fix). As found—no polishing undertaken. Sold as-is; see photos. Measurements Approx. 12¼ in (31 cm) high, ~9 in (23 cm) wide, ~4½ in (11.5 cm) deep. Two pieces (rider + elephant). Care Dust with a soft dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleansers and aggressive polishing to preserve the patina.
